Rose Pruning
|
|
Pruning a rose correctly is easy!
The objective is to maximize the amount of light that falls into the plant. New flowering shoots that are directed by the pruner toward the outside of the plant will do this.
In this picture, several leaves exist on the stem that the flower sits on. Each is at a slightly different orientation with respect to the centre of the plant. The hand is sitting on a leaf that is pointing away from the center of the plant. This leaf was selected because when we cut the blossom, we will have a nice long stem.

Here's the rose stem after cutting
The arrow indicates the bud that will become the new shoot that will bring the next rose. As you can see, the bud is pointed away from the centre of the plant as well as the leaf. The cut should be at an angle (to allow water to run off the end).
A sealant like Artificial Bark could be applied to the end to prevent insects from boring into the exposed cane.
