 Japanese Maple Collector's Series

Sometimes it is rare indeed to find certain varieties of Japanese maple - and we love finding the unusual.
A Japanese maple vendor of ours asked last year if we would be interested in offering very rare and hard to find varieties in a smaller 1 gal sized.
Well duh!  OF COURSE!
Turns out many others felt as we did, for 2025 we have expanded the collection.
These will be available in limited numbers per variety near the end of April.

Mikazuki
This radiant variety has attractive narrow pink leaves with green veins and tinges of white which emerge dark red in spring. It is a dense tree growing to 15 ft. tall but only spreading 10 ft. wide. The lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding red in the fall. This variety requires dappled afternoon shade for best success.

Bonfire
Greeting spring with a burst of brilliant crimson foliage, Bonfire holds its colour for about a month before turning bronze to green, then ending the year in an explosion of fiery orange-red! Growing slowly to 8-12 ft. tall and wide in part sun, it has a rounded form with upright twisted branching.

Fascination
This intriguing variety begins the spring with deeply divided light green leaves that turn slightly darker for the summer. In the fall, its true glory shines through with bright oranges, reds and yellows. White striations on the bark also become quite prominent when older. It grows slowly to 10-16 ft. tall and 8 to 12 ft. wide, forming a mounding appearance. It performs best in dappled shade situations.

Ilarian
This is every Collector's dream! Leaves emerge hot pink then change to whimsical green and white. Each leaf is different, some white or with just a splash of white on green and yet others divided white and green, followed by an orange and red finale! Random pink-striped bark and pink spring twigs adds to its appeal. It grows 10 ft. tall in part sun conditions.

Mikawa Yatsuba Dwarf
This unique dwarf Japanese maple is best known for its use as bonsai. Very dwarf and slow growing, it has leaves that are spaced closely together on short shoots which helps define its structure, colour and density. The leaves on this little dwarf overlap one another to give it a unique appearance. When the leaves first unfold in the spring they are a light yellow-green colour becoming more medium green as they mature. These in fall turn golden-orange in the fall with bright red tips. The leaves are slightly longer than those of other dwarf forms. The growth structure is multi-branched, forming a compact little plant. Could grow to 6 feet in 10 years, and is best sited in sun to partial shade.

Rhode Island Red Dwarf
Named after its source, this upright dwarf variety boasts dense, compact branching in an outstanding rounded form. Bright red spring leaves darken as the foliage matures. Fall foliage turns rich orange-red, with dark red stems in the winter adding drama to the garden. It grows 3-6 inches per year to 6 ft. tall and wide.

Full Moon Maple
A large and full shrub or small tree that is known for it's seasonal leaf colour change. The leaves emerge a bright green colour in spring that fades a little in the summer but comes back with real panache in the fall. Autumn leaves have range of strong colours including scarlet and deep purple, with the show extending well into the fall season. Grows 8 to 10 feet tall in sun to partial shade.

Aoyagi
It's name means 'Green Willows' in Japanese - and there are certainly some characteristics that mimic that.  The first is the bright green bark, which stands out particularly in the winter.  The second is the bright chartreuse green leaves that turn a bright yellow in the fall.  This tree may grow to about 15 to 18 feet tall in partial shade.

Jeddeloh Orange
This beautiful Japanese maple buds pink-red new growth over top of the more mature green growth through the season, giving it a mottled appearance. These leaves then turn to brilliant orange tones in the fall.  It will grow 4 to 5 feet tall in height by 6 to 8 feet wide in about 10 years, exhibiting a strong weeping habit.

Red Filigree Lace
Weeping Japanese maples often have finer leaves then their upright growing counterparts.  What separates this one is that the foliage is EXTREMELY fine and, like it's name, very lace-like in appearance. These leaves maintain a deep purple-red hue throughout the season. It grows slowly to approximately 4' tall and wide, making it an excellent choice for smaller space.

Baby Lace
A diminutive maple that is known for it's very small and delicate threadlike leaves that emerge red and orange in spring.  These same leaves will turn an amazing show of orange and red colours in the fall. It grows to 4 to 6 feet tall by 3 to 5 feet wide in full sun to light shade, and it is well suited for smaller spaces.

Dr. Seuss
This rare, quite dense upright dwarf Japanese maple has green leaves that have a subtle variegation of yellow to green. This variegation is most prominent in early to mid-summer. The fall colour of the leaves ranges from yellow to orange. It will grow 5 to 6 ft. tall and 3 to 4 ft. wide in 10 years, and it should be sited with dappled shade conditions rather then in full sun.
