 Japanese Maple Collector's Series

Sometimes it is rare indeed to find certain varieties of Japanese maple - and we love finding the unusual.
A Japanese maple vendor of ours asked if we would be interested in offering very rare and hard to find varieties in a smaller 1 gal sized plant for 2024.
Well duh!  OF COURSE!
These will be available in limited numbers per variety near the end of April.

Adrian's Compact Dwarf
This small upright dwarf Japanese maple has a slow-growing, compact form and lovely small burgundy leaves that are lighter red when budding. These leaves then turn a brilliant orange and scarlet in the fall. Preferring dappled sun and well-drained, clay-free soil, it could grow to 5 ft. tall x 3 ft. wide in 10 years.

Fireball Dwarf
Great Balls of Fire! This more cold-tolerant dwarf leafs out in cherry red foliage, before turning deep maroon by mid-spring. New growth is always cherry red, creating an ever-changing show of colors. In the fall, it lights up the garden when its leaves transform to bright fire-engine red. Slow growing to 5 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide in 15 years.

Kumoi Nishiki
Also known as Variegated Full Moon Japanese Maple, this variety is prized for its stable, extraordinary white spring variegation. Like white sand dust, it sprinkles evenly over the light green to dark green leaves. Its fall colour can range from yellow to orange. Gracefully maturing to 8 -10 ft in 15 years, it is best planted in a sheltered location in filtered sunlight.

Ilarian
This is every Collector's dream! Leaves emerge hot pink then change to whimsical green and white. Each leaf is different, some white or with just a splash of white on green and yet others divided white and green, followed by an orange and red finale! Random pink-striped bark and pink spring twigs adds to its appeal. It grows 10 ft. tall in part sun conditions.

Gable Glory
Considered one of the most striking of the Japanese Maples, Gable Glory's spring colours range from pink-red to bright cherry red. As this chameleon-like specimen's leaves mature, they become striking orange-yellow for the summer. New summer growth is a bright pink-red to cherry red. Best in dappled sun, it grows 10-12 ft. tall in 15 years.

Kihachijo
The extremely serrated, lacy green foliage on this upright variety gives it an unusually light, airy appearance. In the autumn, there is a stunning show of bright orange, yellow, gold and red leaves. Growing 12-14 ft. and 15 ft. wide in 20 years, it does best in dappled afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.

Kiyohime Dwarf
This unusual, dwarf specimen produces tiny green leaves with a nice purple-red border in the early spring. It grows in a dense, wide habit often 6-7 ft. wide but only 2-3 ft. high in dappled sunlight and is very tolerant of hot summers. Its fall colour is typically yellows, reds, oranges and deep maroon.

Mikazuki
This radiant variety has attractive narrow pink leaves with green veins and tinges of white which emerge dark red in spring. It is a dense tree growing to 15 ft. tall but only spreading 10 ft. wide. The lobed palmate leaves are highly ornamental and turn an outstanding red in the fall. This variety requires dappled afternoon shade for best success.

Orion Dwarf
This charming dwarf Japanese Maple offers deeply divided bright red leaves changing to deep brick red in the summer before exploding into bright red in the fall! Forming an attractive dense habit as it ages, it could grow 3-4 ft. tall and 6-7 ft. wide in 15 years.

Bonfire
Greeting spring with a burst of brilliant crimson foliage, Bonfire holds its colour for about a month before turning bronze to green, then ending the year in an explosion of fiery orange-red! Growing slowly to 8-12 ft. tall and wide in part sun, it has a rounded form with upright twisted branching.

Peaches and Cream
An elegant, fine textured, variegated variety, this is one of the most stunning of the Japanese maples! New spring leaves emerge with beautiful, rosy peach and cream tones, transition into green and cream, before a grand finale of yellows and oranges. Growing 8 ft. tall and 5 ft. wide in 10 years, it forms an upright small tree ideal for a partially shaded, protected garden.

Phoenix
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, this stunning variety breaks spring dormancy with intense, bright red leaves with strong yellow-orange veining. Spectacular red foliage then turns green, with occasional bursts of new red growth to contrast with the green before exploding in oranges and reds in the fall. It grows 6-8 ft. tall and 4-6 ft. wide in a partially sunny condition.

Summer Gold
Like its name, this variety leafs out with chartreuse to yellow green foliage with red borders. Turning to solid gold as the summer progresses, it is probably one of the most heat tolerant types and seldom shows leaf scorch. Its fall colour is deep orange to fiery red. Growing 6-8 ft. tall in 10 years in part sun, it is the perfect, mid-sized tree for your garden!

Tobiosho
Starting bright green with red tipped leaves in the spring, this seemingly plain Japanese maple holds out its best performance for the end of the year. The fall colours are a stunner - beginning gold, turning orange and ending in an explosion of scarlet! Growing 15-20 ft tall and wide in dappled sun, this will be a stand-out in any yard.

Oregon Sunset Dwarf
This compact, round deciduous shrub has graceful, colorful soft red bunches of foliage in spring that darkens to deep plum-red colour in the summer, before brightening to sunset-red hues in fall. Perfect for the small garden it grows slowly to 6 ft. tall and prefers sun to partial shade in well-drained soil.

Geisha Gone Wild
This variegated Japanese Maple is one of the most spectacular when its new spring leaves explode with arrays of fuchsia, pink and purple. Leaves transform into variegated green and white into summer and then change to a spectacle of purple and orange in the fall. An upright deciduous tree, it can reach 6 ft. tall and 3 ft. wide in 10 years in part sun.

Mikawa Yatsuba Dwarf
This unique dwarf Japanese maple is best known for its use as bonsai. Very dwarf and slow growing, it has leaves that are spaced closely together on short shoots which helps define its structure, colour and density. The leaves on this little dwarf overlap one another to give it a unique appearance. When the leaves first unfold in the spring they are a light yellow-green colour becoming more medium green as they mature. These in fall turn golden-orange in the fall with bright red tips. The leaves are slightly longer than those of other dwarf forms. The growth structure is multi-branched, forming a compact little plant. Could grow to 6 feet in 10 years, and is best sited in sun to partial shade.

Rhode Island Red Dwarf
Named after its source, this upright dwarf variety boasts dense, compact branching in an outstanding rounded form. Bright red spring leaves darken as the foliage matures. Fall foliage turns rich orange-red, with dark red stems in the winter adding drama to the garden. It grows 3-6 inches per year to 6 ft. tall and wide.
