 Trees 11
June Snow Dogwood

Acer x freemanii 'Bailston'
Freemanii maples are some of the most popular hybridized tree species (counting Autumn Blaze, Autumn Fantasy, and many others).  Matador continues this tradition of excellence. Freemanii's are characterized by vigorous growth and adaptability. Matador has this but also an improved habit, sturdier upright branching and superior deeper red fall colouring that develops a bit later, and holds later, than most of the others. It grows to 45' tall by approximately 30' wide in most soil conditions.

Rugged Ridge Maple

Acer miyabei 'JFS-KW3AMI'
Deeply furrowed, corky bark sets this impressive cultivar apart from all others! The ‘rugged’ in the name of this variety does not come lightly, as it is tough, adaptable and tolerant of almost all stressful conditions. It can reach 45 ft. tall and 40 ft. wide in sun or part shade. Covered with dark green foliage, its leaves turn yellow in the autumn. A shapely and vigorous tree that would be an excellent street tree or in other difficult urban conditions.

Bowhall Maple

Acer rubrum 'Bowhall'
Bowhall is a tightly formed, sturdy,  narrow tree that would be excellent for street plantings or other narrow spaces. A hybridized variety of Native Red Maple, it grows well in most soil type, has excellent foliage colour of yellow-orange to orangey red in the fall, and will grow to 40 feet tall by about 15 feet wide.

Wright Brothers Sugar Maple

Acer sacchurum 'Wright Brothers''
Discovered at a nursery in the Dayton Ohio area, and named for the famous aviators who were also from there, this large, broadly rounded, deciduous shade tree is unique among the sugar maples as it is considered fast growing. The typical dark green maple leaves transform in fall to clear yellow, vermilion and scarlet.  It is also resistant to leaf tatter and frost cracking injury. It will grow someday to a magnificent specimen of 50 feet tall by 30 feet wide. ** Not available in 2018.

Weeping Wonder Gingko

Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Claim Jumper'
Katsuras are not well-known, but they are excellent trees for many situations.  This very new and unusual katsura has soft golden leaves right from spring until the frost, and will brighten and contrast against the other trees around it. Throughout summer the more shaded leaves will turn green while those in the sun will remain yellow or even almost white. Autumn brings the characteristic sweet fragrance and buttery golden colours that Katsuras are famous for. Katsuras benefit from additional moisture during droughty periods and during establishment, but can also tolerate similar conditions that birch favour, and might be considered a substitute with fewer pest issues.

Little Woody Redbud

Cercis canadensis 'Little Woody'
Redbuds are known for their deep purple pink blossoms that present themselves on the branches and twigs in early spring.  Little Woody offers this, but in a far smaller size than the native Redbud.  It has a small vase shaped canopy and crinkled deep green heart shaped leaves that turn a lovely yellow in fall. It grows to 6 to 8 feet tall by 8 to 10 feet wide. Typically an understory tree, redbuds prefer a sheltered spot with sun to partial shade.

Hanna's Heart Katsura

Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Hanna's Heart'
This new and very hardy Katsura is noted for its upright compact form and deep green heart-shaped leaves that turn a beautiful yellow in the fall. Like other Katsuras, it emits a delicate sweet candy floss like scent as the leaves are preparing to leave the tree in the fall. It only grows 25 ft. tall by 10 ft. wide in sun in most soil types, making it a good tree for screening and smaller yards.

Rosy Teacups Chinese Dogwood

Cornus kousa x nuttalli 'Rosy Teacups'
In Waterloo Region Chinese flowering dogwoods survive best of these beautiful plants. This hybrdized cross between Chinese and Pacific dogwoods offers a tremendous show of beautiful 3 inch wide light rose pink blossoms that can last for up to 3 weeks. These blossoms form 1 inch orange red fruit in late summer that are highly favoured by birds. The disease resistant foliage is medium green in summer turning dark red in the fall. It grows to approximately 25 feet tall and widee in sun to light shade conditions. A multi-season showpiece for any yard.

Strawberry Sundae Hydrangea Treeform

Hydrangea paniculata 'Rensun'
Strawberry Sundae hydrangea is a compact growing hydrangea variety with blossoms that open as white cones and then as the temperature drops in late summer the blossoms develop an beautiful pink overlay to this white colouring, and later it turns more strawberry red. Now this stunning hydrangea is available as a trained and compact tree that is perfect as an accent for small gardens. Grows to 8 feet tall by 6 feet wide in sun or partial shade.

Slender Silhouette Sweet Gum

Liquidambar styraciflua 'Slender Silhouette'
Look closely at the leaves of this thick tree and you will see why it is a star. It's narrow columnar form is full of dark green star shaped leaves that turn lovely yellow to deep red in the fall.  An excellent choice for tight spaces, small gardens or as a striking vertical accdent. Grows quickly to as tall as 35 feet or more by only 4 to 5 feet wide. Unlike most sweet gums, very few spiky seeds are produced. Trees were awarded a top Ontario prize in 2016.

Black Tulip Magnolia

Magnolia x soulangeana 'Jurmag1'
This fantastic introduction from New Zealand is the darkest, most dramatic tulip magnolia of almost any currently available with rich, deep burgundy-red 6-inch blooms that appear before the foliage emerges in early spring. It grows to 15 feet tall by about 8 to 10 feet wide in full sun and well drained conditions. An elegant small specimen tree as with all magnolias in Waterloo Region it should be carefully sited from extreme winter winds from the north.

Sunsprite Magnolia

Magnolia 'Sun Sprite'
Don't think you have room for a magnolia? Think again. This beautiful tree has an extremely narrow growth habit but is slower growing. At 15 years old, the original plant is not much more than 12 feet tall and only about a foot wide! Deep golden yellow flowers have strong purple splashes at their bases. Very late blooming, it also avoids most late frosts. A rare offering, this will fit in the smallest of gardens. As with all magnolias in Waterloo Region, it should be carefully sited away from strong northwest winter winds.

Candied Apple Crabapple

Malus 'Weepcanzam'
Candied Apple crabapple is a compact and hardy weeping tree with a plentitude of soft pink blossoms in May. Unique for this year is finding this variety where the trunk of the tree has been trained into a broad spiral, giving the tree a distinctive form additional to its pretty flowers and dark red persistent fruit that hold on into the winter and are favoured by birds.  Leaves are green with wine coloured highlights, turning green in fall. A dwarf tree that grows to approximately 15 feet, but that can be pruned to maintain its size and form.

Exclamation London Plane Tree

Platanus x acerifolia 'Exclamation'
This hybrid selection of the London planetree was selected for its uniform, upright-pyramidal habit, which is conical in its youth; its strong central leader; and attractive large green foliage that turns yellow in fall. This plant is densely branched, has a moderate growth rate, is light-fruiting, and shows resistance to frost cracking and anthracnose (common problems with most other varieties of plane tree). It develops an attractive peeling bark that planetrees are noted for and will grow someday to  60' in height with a 30' spread.

Sargent's Cherry

Prunus sargentii
This very hardy and beautiful tree is a rare find for this year...the first time it's been available in any size in well over 25 years!  Called the “crème de la crème” of flowering cherries, the Sargent cherry offers year-round beauty.  Pink blooms adorn the tree in late spring, the leaves unfurl with a purplish or bronze hue that transition to a shiny dark green into summer and then red, orange and bronze in the fall; and the winter landscape benefits from its attractive bark. Grows 20 to 30 ft. tall in full sun.

Shingle Oak

Quercus imbricaria
The first thing you will notice about this unique tree is how 'un-oak' looking the uniquely shaped rich green leaves are. Very different! Historically valued for its durable wood, the Shingle Oak (also known as Northern Laurel Oak) forms a straight trunk and rounded crown, and grows to 40 to 60 feet tall by 50 feet wide in its lifetime. Small spring catkins form dark brown shiny acorns that are a favourite of wildlife.

Skinny Genes Oak

Quercus robur x alba 'Skinny Genes'
How exciting is this tree! Skinny Genes is a new hybrid cross of English and White Oaks. It is possibly the narrowest, tightest branched oak developed to date. It grows quickly to 45 ft. tall but when fully mature is only 10 ft. wide. Show-stopping mildew resistant glossy dark green foliage turns tawny yellow before defoliating for winter. Adaptable to many soil types, it is a useful tree for screening of smaller yards.

Accolade Elm

Ulmus 'Morton'
A hybrid variety of elm, Accolade's disease and insect resistance compared to the problematic American Elm sets this fine vase-shaped cultivar apart. Beautifully covered in glossy dark green foliage, it is tolerant of heat, drought and all but extremely heavy clay conditions.  It can reach 40-60 ft. tall in its lifetime, spreading to 40 ft. wide at the crown. Leaves turn a pleasant golden yellow in the autumn. Named Urban Tree of the Year in 2012.

Winter Orange Linden

Tilia cordata 'Winter Orange'
New from Holland, this delightful variety bears not only the fragrant summer flowers and glossy, fine textured heart-shaped leaves of the species, but also produces deep orangey reddish bark with pink buds for winter interest!  A well behaved shade tree, it is tolerant of most soil and city conditions. Growing 35-40 ft. tall, it forms a tear-shape head that only spreads 25-30 ft. wide.
